British Schools Modern Biathlon 2018
The St Francis biathletes put in a great performance at this year’s British Schools Modern Biathlon held last weekend. The team did well just to get to Crystal Palace (and home again!) with the mini-beast from the East and the bad weather it brought.
One of our Year 5 pupils, competing for the first time shares her experience of the event;
I was really excited but nervous about competing in my first British Schools Modern Biathlon Championship last Saturday. It was held at the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre in London. I had to run 800m in the outdoor stadium and then swim 50m in the Olympic sized swimming pool. When I did my run there was a terrible blizzard and the wind was so strong the snow was horizontal, I could hardly see where I was going on the back straight. I managed to keep going and win my heat with a new personal best time.
After a huge hot chocolate to warm up it was the swim, I had never been in an Olympic sized swimming pool before it was huge! I was in lane number 3 and the end of the pool seemed a very long way off. As I dived in off the block my hat nearly came off. I swam as fast as I could and was just beaten into second place in my heat, but I was really happy, as I had knocked 4 seconds off my personal best time. It was a long wait for the results and I was amazed when I saw that I was placed 15th out of 104 competitors in my age group with a final score of 2282. The St Francis U10 team had come a fantastic 7th out of all of the teams there and we had only just missed out on a team medal by 100 points. Well-done St Francis!
