Relocating to Wiltshire
Many of our families join St Francis School when they move to Wiltshire, perhaps moving out from London or even overseas. We may be biased, but we firmly believe that Wiltshire is a fantastic place for family life. It has the perfect balance of relaxed country living combined with enough going on to keep the whole family occupied.
St Francis School is located in the heart of the Vale of Pewsey, with beautiful landscapes, villages, places to stay, things to do and ancient history. Wiltshire is a rural farming county which boasts stunning rolling countryside, the historic city of Salisbury, pretty market towns such as Marlborough and Devizes and a mixture of bustling and sleepy villages.
Excellent transport links
By train you can be in London in under an hour. Pewsey station is situated a couple of minutes from St Francis and has direct services to London Paddington as well as Newbury, Reading and the West Country. St Francis School Before and After School Care Clubs are timed to enable parents to catch the 08:17 train to London and to be back in time for a 6pm pick up.
You can access the M4 and the A303 within half an hour, giving you easy access by car to Swindon, Reading, Bristol, Bath, London and the South West for holidays and weekends away. Heathrow, Gatwick, Southampton, Bristol and Bournemouth airports are all easily accessible.
Wiltshire has a selection of strong choices for senior schools, including Marlborough College, Dauntsey’s, St Mary’s Calne, Warminster and Godolphin as well as a selection of highly regarded local state secondaries including St John’s in Marlborough.
The great outdoors and things to do
This is where Wiltshire really comes into its own. The countryside is simply stunning, with several areas of outstanding natural beauty to explore, the famous Wiltshire White Horses on the Downs, the Kennet & Avon canal – we could go on! At St Francis, we are lucky to be based on a 17 acre site by the canal, right in the heart of the Pewsey vale, so our pupils enjoy the benefit of their surroundings each day.
If you enjoy getting away from it all or eating out, there are excellent 5* hotels, restaurants, pubs and coffee shops, it’s also only 90 minutes to the coast in Dorset.
Local days out include Longleat safari park, Stonehenge, Salisbury Cathedral and many National Trust properties including Stourhead, Lacock and Avebury.
There’s also a busy arts and ‘shop local’ scene, with local farmers markets, independent shops and community events such as local carnivals, literature, jazz and scarecrow festivals.
A built-in support network at St Francis
It can be a daunting prospect to move to a new area, especially without a local support network in place. At St Francis School we pride ourselves on our friendly, family atmosphere and find that our new families forge new friendships quickly. This is supported by our parents association, the Friends of St Francis, who organise social events and welcome new families. Each class also has a support network of parents, which can be invaluable if you need help or if your train is running late!
